How to install Win98 SE... CDR101 Not ready reading drive E? I'm having to use a boot floppy disk I got from here... I thought the following link would guide me through the process, but I'm stuck. Towards the bottom of that link, it says: How to Install Windows 98 After you partition and format your hard disk, you can install Windows 98: Insert the Windows 98 Startup disk in the floppy disk drive, and then restart your computer. When the Windows 98 Startup menu is displayed, choose the Start computer with CD-ROM support option, and then press ENTER. If CD-ROM support is provided by the generic drivers on the Startup disk, you receive one of the following messages, where X is the drive letter that is assigned to your CD-ROM drive: Drive X: = Driver MSCD001 Drive X: = Driver OEMCD001 NOTE: If your CD-ROM drive is not available after you boot from the Windows 98 Startup disk, install the CD-ROM drivers that are included with your CD-ROM drive. For information about how to obtain and install the most current driver for your CD-ROM drive, view the documentation that is included with your device, or contact your hardware manufacturer. Insert the Windows 98 CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive, type the following command at a command prompt, and then press ENTER X:\setup where X is the drive letter that is assigned to your CD-ROM drive. When you receive the following message, press ENTER, and then follow the instructions on the screen to complete the Setup procedure: Please wait while the Setup initializes. Setup is now going to perform a routine check on your system. To continue press Enter. Well anyway, just like it said, my screen said: Drive E: = Driver MSCD001 unit 0 and just like it said, I typed E:\setup but, it now says: CDR101 Not ready reading drive E Abort, Retry, Fail? What do I do now? Was I suppose to formart the drive with FAT16 instead of FAT32? I just found this at the following link... This should make your cdrom visible Copy autoexec.bat config.sys and mscdex.exe "found in c:\windows command" along with the cdrom driver file "ide-cdd.sys" linked below to the win98 boot disk ...er/ide-cdd.sys add this line to config.sys on the floppy DEVICE=VIDE-CDD.SYS /D:MSCD001 ass this line to autoexec.bat on the floppy MSCDEX /D:MSCD001 I guess I'll see if I can make sense of it, but would appreciate some guidance.

dze replied: "sometimes systems store the actual restoration files on another partition of the harddrive ... maybe that is Q ... why its not reading it i dont know ... maybe the drive is corrupt .. maybe the drive letter was changed .. maybe the partition was deleted ... maybe theres somthing else u need to do read ur documentation ..."

mrbriankf replied: "Can you provide more details? For instance, did you receive this message after rebooting with the restore CD in the drive? If not, try rebooting your laptop with the restore CD in the drive. Also, make sure your CD ROM is listed in the BIOS as the first boot drive."

Windows Explorer is giving an illegal operation message before it load and tells me I have to shut down. HELP! I have tried restarting and it comes up each time. i tried putting in the recovery disc and that gets me nowhere as well. On a completely black screen with white writing, I get a message CDR101 Not ready reading drive M....abort, retry or fail? then a cursor. What's the deal here? HELP!

etheesdad™ replied: "1. start menu > programs -> accessories -> tools -> system restore 2. use system restore to put your pc back to an earlier date before the problem occurred. if this doesn't work, do this"

computer help? my laptop ibm thinkpad 385ed has taken a dump and I am trying to install the "operating sytem" when I do so it goes through a series of test and check and downloads and then it gives me an error of "CDR101: not ready reading drive z" Abort, retry, fail? I don't believe I have a drive Z. What the heck am I doing wrong. I don't have the original operating sytem.

hard_cane0 replied: "Mostly your CD has corrupted file,,,,,or your CD rom is damaged,, try another CD with the operating system"

BURNZ replied: "it's one of your roms. cd or floppy, maybe USB if you have something plugged in, send it to the company so they can fix it, don't open the computer urself you will void the warrenty."

A F replied: "Z can = unknown drive I'm guessing you have already tried clicking retry a few times. If that plus shutting down and trying again does not get it and you have no restore disks you probably need an expert in hands on computer repair which is still cheaper than a new machine. I have a think pad that decided it was dead that came back to life by taking out the battery pack and waiting a few min and putting it back. I don't know why or if it would solve your problem but it is certainly worth trying. Work carefully and of course work with it unplugged. Obviously don't tpuch anything back there with metal and basicly don't touch anything but the battery holding case."
